Visit any kitchen anywhere in the world, and you will find that there are very few that are without some sort of canned good in the pantry.
It makes sense then, that every kitchen simply must have a good can opener.
Canning, a process designed to keep perishable foods from expiring for years at a time, dates back as early as the late 1700’s and is still as necessary today, as it was then.
The container itself is virtually indestructible, and with all the advancements in technology and innovation, you would think that all canneries would have converted to the pull-tab by now—a method by which a ring tab is lifted, then pulled back to remove the lid; making it a lot more convenient and easier to open.
However inconvenient it may be for some, the traditional method of using a can opener is still alive and kicking, and no kitchen is complete without it.
Since the proverbial can-opening wheel hasn’t been completely reinvented, or tossed out altogether, we took it upon ourselves to conduct a test, opening cans with the top 10 can openers available for purchase. We searched high and low to find can openers that are durable, safe, easy-to-use, rust-resistant but most of all, have a smooth, skip-proof, clean cut and rotation.
In lowest to highest ranking order, below is an expert review of the best can openers, consisting of everything you need to make the perfect choice to add to your cart. And now, without further delay, we introduce to you:

After a thorough review of can openers available for purchase on Amazon, we selected can openers that met or exceeded the expectations in the following categories: quality of cut, durability, pricing, rust resistance, versatility and customer feedback. A point was awarded for each category, and the top ten highest scores moved into the next round. Next, we tested the top 10 can openers to determine the best of the best, based on overall performance. A majority vote by a panel of expert judges helped determined the final ranking.
Each can opener has undergone the test of opening cans ranging from standard, to commercial-sized #10 cans. If openers were not equipped for use on larger cans, then accordingly, we did not attempt to test them under those conditions. However, they were marked down for those deficiencies.
Additionally, using the provided cleaning instructions as the basis for scoring and testing measures, we waited one week to check for any signs of rusting.
Open Says Me
When shopping for a can-opener, you want something that makes opening cans easy, yes? This is most important and seems easy enough, but when presented with your many options, it can be overwhelming. You have the manual opener, which can be the old-fashion crank or the turn knob styles we’ve all grown accustomed to. Then, there’s the reliable electric can opener, which now also comes in a size to fit snugly inside of your palm to accommodate whether you are right, or left-handed.
Not enough to sway you one way or the other? Well, we’re not done yet. We’re just getting warmed up. Scroll down and take a gander at our detailed product description, to include: pricing information and other specifications, a list of the pros and cons, and last but not least, a helpful buyer’s guide:
10. Arrela Strong Can Opener – Perfect for Stainless Steel Kitchens
The Good: This sleek, 2-in-1 opener works for both cans and bottles.
It slices through cans like a knife through butter given the extra sharp blade, so it handles quite well.
It has a reversible feature, so it’s left hand user-friendly and lightweight for those who may have delicate wrist strength. The over-sized hanging hoop holes are a helpful storage component, that we didn’t find anywhere else. This opener would be the perfect accent to your stainless steel kitchen. Its premium quality is backed by a 3-month manufacturer’s warranty.
The Bad: It is unfortunate for Arrela that the customer review feedback information is unreliable, because they do in fact have a good product.
Looking past that, we were surprised to learn that it is not safe for dishwashers, with it being stainless steel and all. Also, its lightweight design sort of feels like the life-span might not be as long as you would like, therefore we can’t really say for sure, but it might a blessing and a curse.
A glaring omission in its design that stood out the most, is the turn knob lacks rubber or traction, that can easily cause slipping.
9. Hicober Manual Can Opener – Awesome Quality
The Good: That brings us to the ninth position held by Hicober’s Manual Can Opener, which brings a lot of features to the table.
This high-quality opener has a nice sized, shapely, easy-turn knob, with anti-slip handles that are extra long for help securing your grip while you open cans.
Its no-rust stainless steel design, also offers a 3-in-1 feature, that gives you exactly what you would expect out of a good opener. If you don’t mind spending some money, this is the opener that will satisfy anyone looking for something that won’t breakdown soon after purchase.
The blade was pretty sharp, and we were able to make a clean cut with ease. This was a well-built opener, that should last a long while. To back up that statement, the manufacturer offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee or your money back; that is, on top of a lifetime warranty. You can’t lose.
The Bad: As solid as this opener is, we don’t think the price point should be as high as it is.
Although it is high quality, the handles sort of lacks appeal—appearing similar to most other openers that did not make the list, with the flat/horizontal design that makes the grip bulky.
Also, without a locking mechanism, we experienced some shavings after falling of track during rotation. Yeah, well, it happens…
8. Tonicstar Can Opener – Amazon’s Choice
The Good: Tonicstar is truly a star in the world of can openers, as a “number one new release” endorsed by the eCommerce giant, Amazon. It is one of their best-rated openers, and we know why.
Not only is it reasonably priced, but it has the locking mechanism feature that is wildly popular with customers. The slanted, ergonomic handles gives way to a seemingly laborous-free rotation. The ability to not let the can slip and get away from you is vital, and this opener gives you the strong sense of grip control.
The Bad: Luckily, there is a locking mechanism because the blade on this one is a little smaller compared to other openers.
We had to re-secure it to the can, because we noticed some skipping, so be sure to properly latch it onto the can, otherwise you may experience skipping. The handles are a bit bulky which is probably why we ran off course a bit.
Also for all you germaphobic types, this may deter you, but the manufacturer recommends rinsing with water only. When following the manufacturer’s care instructions, we noticed an insignificant amount of corrosion forming at the cutting wheel.
7. Swing-A-Way Easy Crank Can Opener – Best for Arthritis
The Good: Swing-A-Way’s old-fashion can opener design comes as relief to arthritis sufferers or those with impeding wrist strength.
The extra long handle, puts you in control, steadying your grip as you crank open the goods. It is easy to use, pain-free, and the faster you crank, the faster it opens. Not only is it skip-proof, it also serves as a 2-in-1 bottle opener.
When put to the test of opening commercial-sized #10 cans, it cracked those babies opened in no time flat! This opener is absolutely ideal for busy restaurants, which require a lot of tin can opening. The folding crank allows for easy storage and there’s not much more you want out of an opener, than for what you’re getting with this one. The modest price makes it a real bargain.
The Bad: This opener is deceitfully lightweight, despite its size and capability, so although it makes opening cans feel effortless, the quality isn’t as high as its counterparts on this list. If only it came with a magnet of some sort, this would be an even better opener, placing it higher in position on this list.
Although we followed the “handwash only with mild soap” cleaning instructions, we encountered some rusting less than a week after use.
6. Wellehomi Premium Can Opener – Best Value
The Good: This high-performance multi-functional opener can be used on cans as well as jars.
It has that high quality, smooth cutting rotation we all look forward to in a great can opener, and comes at a very modest price. After use, feel free to toss it into the dishwasher, because unlike a lot of other openers, it’s 100% dishwasher safe.
It is a heavy-duty, professional grade quality, that is backed by a manufacturer’s 100% satisfaction guarantee.
The Bad: This unit weighs a little heavier than others with a similar design, therefore it could be a small burden for some users. The hanging holes are small, so it was awkward trying to hang and remove from my bulky hook.
5. Instecho Electric Can Opener – Best New Release
The Good: If you are looking for something high-tech in a can opener, then this one is for you. Check out Instecho’s can-opening sensation, that has it all; designed to fit in the palm of your hand. Either hand, that is, which is a rarity in the market.
Choose from three lively colors, and whether you want electric or battery-operated. It’s safe, sanitary and cuts clean; with three different blades on the job. The magnet feature is a huge bonus, that not many openers offer, but customers seem to love.
We were pretty impressed with this unit, and could have easily opened cans all night, with no fuss.
The Bad: For every pro, there is a con and unfortunately the cons stand out big time. While we feel we could have opened cans all night, we could only open standard size cans, lowering the ranking of this opener by a couple of notches. Also, this unit can only be wiped clean, which sort of defeats the sanitary benefits of not having to touch the lid.
4. Zyliss Lock n’ Lift Can Opener – Best Seller
The Good: The ingenious design of this can opener is next-level. It is obvious the manufacturer understands what customers need out of a can opener. It incorporates innovation, versatility and style in its design, and all at a low price.
Not only is it magnetic, it also has a “lock n’ lift” feature with a dedicated button that is just as cool as it sounds. It literally does everything. It fits on all size cans, and comes in different colors.
The Bad: I have small hands, so I personally found the handles a little wide and harder to grip. Its plastic design makes this unit feel a little delicate, and if too much pressure is applied, it feels like it might break.
3. Pangda Manual Can Opener – Our Favorite Pick
The Good: Although Pangda’s unit is a new comer, right away we were attracted to this unit’s look.
It may not necessarily be the best, but it’s our favorite, here’s why: it has a tool design for easy handling, which means you actually get the feel of a pair of pliers are being gripped in your hand.
Unlike pliers, this opener has slim, anti-skid handles allowing a tight, no-slip grip and a smooth rotation. The turn knob is ergonomic, and aids in making a good clean cut through the tin. The sharp blade is protected by a safety release button that is pressed before each use. As if all of that weren’t enough, it also comes with a stylish, detachable wine opener. Made with zinc and alloy, it is rust-resistant and durable—making it an all-around favorite.
The Bad: Under testing conditions, the safety release button is both a plus and a minus, but only because we had plenty of cans to open, and it became a tiny bit of a nuisance. Of course, for regular household usage, its great to have as a precautionary safety measure, especially if you have inquisitive little ones at home, who enjoy shiny things.
Although it cuts magnificently, we think the turn knob could be improved upon, which could bump this unit’s ranking even higher.
2. Bangshou Manual Can Opener – Best Deal
The Good: We are firm believers in products that are backed by manufacturer’s lifetime guarantees. They speak volumes with regards to its design, output and quality, as well as to the manufacturer’s faith in their product. If there was no truth in their backing, they would be guaranteeing themselves right out of business. And so it comes as no surprise that the Bangshou Manual Can Opener comes with such a guarantee.
That being said, I would accredit this opener’s effectiveness to the large, extra sharp blade. We were able to maneuver that tin can, as if were aluminum foil. We were pretty pleased with the outcome. The Bangshou’s 3-in-1 can opener possesses everything you would expect to get out of a great opener and at a great price.
The Bad: Without a single negative review, from our end or online, it was really hard to find anything wrong with this opener. However, with only 22 reviews available, we will count limited consumer feedback as its only setback. Oh, and it’s not voice-activated, does that count as a legitimate negative? No? Nevermind.
1. Hamilton Beach Can Opener – Best Can Opener
The Good: Holding on tight to the top spot is Hamilton Beach’s model 76606ZA, a beautiful black and chrome, electric standing can opener, for your consideration.
Along with its attractive design, comes the side-cutting feature, for the neat removal of can tops, as well as the optional kitchen scissors and carrying compartment, as an added accessory. No other opener on this list offers what this model does. This can opener does all of the work for you, with just one press.
The numbers don’t lie, and the number of positive customer reviews are consistently pouring in. I simply wouldn’t be myself, if I didn’t add my two cents, and here you have it: this opener, has no equal.
The Bad: Try finding problems with the best of the best, and you will discover the true meaning of “nitpicking.” But, for the sake of reviewing objectively, it could be argued that it can only be wiped clean, as there are no removable parts—outside of the optional scissors.
The unit is not designed for commercial use, so unfortunately it can not be used to open 28-ounce cans.
Can Opener’s Buyer’s Guide
Can-opening is not meant to be fun, it’s a necessity. No matter the size of the can, it is an obstacle, standing firmly between us and our goods.
How many times have you seen or been in a situation, where you have someone, or a group of people, famished and ready to eat and although there is canned food, there’s no opener? Desperate times, no? Needless to say, the measures people take to open cans without it, can in fact be dangerous, albeit hilarious. Times like these, of course, any opener will do.
But when you have the chance to purchase a can opener ahead of desperate times, you have the freedom to choose whether to buy one that is compact for portable use, or maybe one that is priced inexpensively enough, so that you can buy in quantities for travelling purposes or whatever have you. The point is, you would much rather “have one and not need it, than need one and not have it.”
It’s easy to forget about the need for something as simple as a can opener, even though it is an essential kitchen tool. Large in part it is a grunting task. Truthfully, I don’t know of a single person alive, who actually looks forward to opening cans. However, if the opener can make the experience as facile as physically possible, then it puts a person at a great advantage. The hardest part, will be finding the best one for your buck. This is where your good friends at 10Mango come in.

Attractive and shiny are nice-to-haves, most definitely. But even in buying something as simplistic as a can opener, there is a lot to take into account. Consider asking yourself these types of questions before making a purchase:
